Is Magnesium Good for AFib?
Video Transcript:
Hi everyone, I’m Meaghan Esser, a Registered Holistic Nutritionist with ITL Health. Today I’m answering a question we received:
Is magnesium good for AFib (Atrial Fibrillation)?
What is AFib?
AFib, or Atrial Fibrillation, is a type of irregular heartbeat or heart arrhythmia. It’s a serious condition that can lead to stroke, blood clots, or heart failure. If you think you might have AFib, it’s essential to speak with your doctor immediately. Likewise, before taking any magnesium supplement, always consult with your GP or pharmacist—especially if you’re on medication or managing a heart condition.
How Magnesium Supports Heart Health
That said, magnesium plays a vital role in cardiovascular function. In fact, one study involving nearly 1,200 patients with AFib found that 300 mg of daily magnesium supplementation resulted in positive outcomes for 82% of participants.
Why does magnesium matter? Your heart is a muscle, and muscles require magnesium to function properly. While calcium triggers contraction, magnesium helps with muscle relaxation—a critical balance, particularly for the heart. Magnesium also helps regulate blood pressure, making it even more essential for heart health.
Interestingly, some studies suggest that magnesium deficiency may pose a greater risk to heart health than high cholesterol. That’s a powerful reason to consider magnesium if you or someone you love is struggling with cardiovascular issues.
Why Supplementation Matters
It's important to note that less than 1% of magnesium is found in your blood, so standard blood tests may not accurately reflect your true magnesium status. If you’re experiencing symptoms of magnesium deficiency, it may be time to look into supplementation.
We recommend:
-
MAG365 Ionic Magnesium Citrate Powder – Highly absorbable and ideal for those with heart concerns; you can sip it gradually throughout the day.
-
PrizMAG Pure Magnesium Bisglycinate Capsules – A gentle, well-absorbed magnesium chelate that enters cells directly without irritating the digestive system.
Both are available online at the links below or at your local health store in Ireland and the UK.
Thanks so much for watching—and remember, your heart deserves the very best support.
