Hi everyone!
I’m Meaghan Esser, a Registered Holistic Nutritionist with ITL Health. Today, I’m answering one of our most frequently asked questions:
How long does it take for magnesium citrate to make you poop?
Now, it might sound like a funny question—but if you’re dealing with constipation, you know it’s no laughing matter. In fact, constipation can be a sign of magnesium deficiency. One of magnesium’s key roles in the body is to help muscles relax—and yes, that includes your intestines. If your bowel is too tight or tense, it can’t function properly to move things along.
Magnesium also draws water into the intestines, which softens hard stools and makes them easier to pass. So, when taken for constipation, magnesium citrate can help get things moving—anywhere from 30 minutes to 6 or even 12 hours later. Everyone’s body is different, so it’s hard to give an exact timeline.
Many people take magnesium at night because it also promotes restful sleep, then wake up to a smoother bowel movement in the morning. If you need quick relief, though, you can take magnesium citrate during the day. It won’t knock you out—it just helps the body (and the bowel) relax.
For constipation, we recommend MAG365 Ionic Magnesium Citrate Powder. It’s easy to mix, quick to absorb, and allows you to gradually increase your dose until you reach what’s known as bowel tolerance. That way, you get effective results without overdoing it.
Worried about loose stools?
MAG365 won’t cause diarrhoea unless you take more than your body needs. If you’re just here out of curiosity—or if you don’t struggle with constipation—try our PrizMAG Pure Magnesium Bisglycinate Tablets instead. This form of magnesium is absorbed on a cellular level, bypassing the digestive system. It’s gentle, effective, and won’t upset sensitive stomachs.
You can find both MAG365 and PrizMAG at your local health shop in Ireland or the UK, or you can order online through our website.
Thanks for watching—and as always, keep sending in your great questions!
